A major breakthrough about the potentially deadly superbug Clostridium difficile (C-diff) could lead to new ways to combat the bacterium, according to a study to be published March 1 in the journal Nature.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Good news!

This bug not only causes pain and diarrhea and can kill, it is very difficult to treat.

A new treatment target is sorely needed.

Have been trying for years to get the attention of the people ( in Tennessee and Virginia ) who can and should be doing something about this so called superbug and they don't care, all I get is either and excuse, passed on to another state board or agency, or nothing at all! My father went into a local hospital for a three day procedure that turned out to be a ten month long nightmare after getting hospital acquired Methicillan Resistant Staphlococcus Aureaus or (MRSA) he rotted to death.

If you look at my web site, you will see Profit Care comes way ahead of Patient Care in East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. See on my site what is really deemed, defended and supported as "THE ACCEPTABLE STANDARDS OF HEALTH CARE" in East Tennessee, it's on public record in Federal Court, Greeneville, Tennessee, case no. 2:04-cv-375 and it's nothing in comparison to the slick health care system's misleading advertising.

I never understood WHY when the hospital I worked in isolated these patients...they flat out refused to stock the isolation carts with shoe covers...

I was told time and time again, it wasn't needed, if universal precautions were followed, and proper linen handling was followed. I just laughed. These decisions were OBVIOUSLY made up by those who have never cared for a patient with C-DIFF. They lose control of their bowels so completely, they leave a TRAIL trying to get to the bathroom. (and then in embarassment, try to wipe it up themselves, without disinfecting anything)

On my unit, this was rampant. And we all knew why! The nurses had to walk through stool to tend the patient...then, on to the next one!

(and that patient drops his pillow on the floor...MERRY CHRISTMAS! You now have C-DIFF)

SHOE COVERS...SHOE COVERS!

(I would love to see a study that cultured the bacteria on nurses shoes...folks, hospital floors are UNBELIEVABLY foul)
